How to Calculate Substitute Yarn Skeins From Pattern Yardage

Convert a pattern yardage or original package count into the number of substitute skeins without matching packages one-for-one.

Direct answer

Calculate substitute yarn from total length, not from the original number of packages.

substitute packages = ceil(required total length / substitute length per package)

When the pattern gives only original packages:

required total length = original packages × original length per package

The ceiling function means round any partial result upward to a whole purchasable package. This is package rounding, not a hidden contingency.

Start with the selected size and color

Patterns often list different quantities by size. Use only the requirement for the size you intend to make. When several colors are listed, calculate each one independently because a project total cannot recover the allocation among colors.

Before calculating, verify whether the quantity includes borders, sleeves, seaming, motifs, tassels, or other finishing. Do not silently add or remove components.

Example from original package counts

A pattern calls for eight skeins of the original yarn, and each original skein contains 150 yards.

8 × 150 = 1,200 yards required

A candidate yarn contains 210 yards per skein.

1,200 / 210 = 5.714...

The purchasing result is six whole candidate skeins before any separately chosen allowance.

The exact ratio should remain visible because it explains the rounding. Reporting only “six” hides whether the raw result was 5.01 or 5.99.

Example from total pattern yardage

A pattern already states 1,450 yards. A candidate contains 273 yards per ball.

1,450 / 273 = 5.311...

Round upward to six balls. Do not multiply by the original package count when the total length is already known.

Convert mixed units first

Both lengths must use the same unit. NIST defines one international yard as exactly 0.9144 meter.

meters = yards × 0.9144

yards = meters / 0.9144

For example, 1,200 yards equals 1,097.28 meters. If a candidate contains 200 meters per ball:

1,097.28 / 200 = 5.4864

The result is six balls.

Do not divide 1,200 yards directly by 200 meters. The calculator converts internally before applying the package formula.

Optional candidate mass estimate

When the candidate label gives both package length and package mass, estimate the mass associated with the required length:

candidate mass = required length × candidate label mass / candidate label length

For 1,200 yards and a candidate label of 210 yards per 100 grams:

1,200 × 100 / 210 = 571.43 g

The six whole packages weigh 600 grams according to the printed package values. The difference between 571.43 grams and 600 grams is a consequence of whole-package rounding.

This estimate does not validate gauge or fabric behavior. It uses printed label ratios and does not measure the individual packages in hand.

Compare package sizes without being misled

Two candidates can have the same total mass per ball but very different length. Conversely, one may use a smaller package with a similar length-per-mass ratio. Normalize both labels when useful:

meters per 100 g = label meters / label grams × 100

This helps explain package differences, but quantity still comes from the candidate’s actual length per package.

Multiple colors and held-together yarns

For multiple colors, repeat the calculation for every color requirement. Round each color upward independently; leftover length from one color cannot satisfy another.

For yarns held together, preserve the required length for each strand unless the pattern explicitly specifies another arrangement. A project using two strands together may require the stated length of each strand, not half the total. The pattern’s materials instructions control this interpretation.

Partial packages, cones, and remnants

The basic formula assumes whole retail packages. When purchasing by cone, measured remnant, or another divisible format, keep the exact required length or mass instead of forcing whole-skein rounding.

If you already own a partial package, subtract a measured or reliably documented remaining length before dividing the outstanding requirement by new-package length. Do not estimate the remainder from appearance alone when the decision matters.

Contingency is a separate decision

A maker may add a personal allowance for swatching, joins, borders, repairs, matching dye lots, or uncertainty in the pattern requirement. There is no universal percentage established by the sources used here.

Keep the calculation auditable:

  1. show the base required length;
  2. show any chosen allowance and its reason;
  3. show the adjusted total;
  4. divide by candidate package length;
  5. round upward.
