Fiber Content and Yarn Substitution: What Math Cannot Predict
Use label fiber information as a review flag and evaluate the candidate fabric physically instead of assigning unsupported numeric behavior scores.

Fiber content belongs in every yarn substitution review, but a general calculator should not assign a universal numeric score for drape, stretch, warmth, softness, durability, blocking, or suitability from a fiber name alone.
The yarn label identifies declared fibers and care instructions. The finished crochet fabric also depends on blend percentages, yarn construction, twist, ply, surface, stitch pattern, hook, gauge, treatment, and the maker’s tension.
What the label can tell you
Record the complete composition and percentages for both the original and candidate yarn. Also record:
- package length and mass;
- care instructions;
- broad yarn-weight category;
- suggested hook and gauge;
- dye-lot information;
- any stated construction, such as plied, single-ply, chainette, tape, ribbon, brushed, bouclé, or otherwise textured.
These fields create a comparison record. They do not predict the finished fabric automatically.
Use a composition difference as a review flag
When the candidate composition differs from the original, the substitution calculator asks the user to flag that difference. The flag means that quantity and gauge math are not enough.
It does not mean that different fibers are always unacceptable. It also does not mean that matching fiber names are automatically safe.
“Both are wool,” “both are cotton,” or “both are acrylic” can hide differences in blend, construction, surface, and processing. A 100% fiber label also does not describe every physical property relevant to the project.
Why universal fiber multipliers are unsupported
A tempting approach is to assign fixed values such as “cotton has X drape,” “wool stretches Y%,” or “acrylic needs Z% more yarn.” The reviewed standards and sources do not establish universal product-level multipliers that remain valid across blends, constructions, stitches, hooks, gauges, and treatments.
Publishing such values would create false precision. The site therefore does not convert fiber names into:
- automatic hook changes;
- universal yardage adjustments;
- fixed stretch or shrinkage percentages;
- warmth or softness scores;
- guaranteed care outcomes;
- pass/fail compatibility results.
Review the physical candidate fabric
Make a representative swatch in the pattern stitch and treat it as the project will be treated. Record observations rather than replacing them with a generic score.
Useful questions include:
- Does the stitch pattern remain clear enough for the design?
- Is the fabric too dense, open, rigid, fluid, heavy, or light for the intended use?
- Does the surface obscure texture or create a different visual effect?
- Do the post-treatment dimensions remain usable?
- Does the fabric recover after normal handling?
- Do joins, seams, or motifs behave acceptably?
- Are the care instructions realistic for the intended object?
These observations must come from the maker’s actual sample. Crochet Math Studio does not claim that a yarn or project was physically tested unless documented testing exists.
Separate fiber review from quantity math
Purchase quantity remains a total-length calculation:
candidate packages = ceil(required total length / candidate length per package)
Fiber similarity does not justify matching original packages one-for-one. Fiber difference also does not change the deterministic formula by itself.
The candidate’s length-per-mass ratio can estimate the mass associated with the required length:
candidate mass = required length × candidate mass per package / candidate length per package
That estimate may show that the candidate puts substantially more or less mass into the same length. It still cannot predict whether the finished object will feel or perform the same.
Construction can matter as much as composition
Two yarns with similar fiber labels can be built differently. Twist, ply, air, chainette structure, brushed fibers, or tape-like construction can affect how much length fits into a given mass and how the strand behaves in a stitch.
When construction information is unavailable, do not infer it from a product photo or category alone. Mark the record incomplete and rely more heavily on the physical sample.
Care instructions are part of the decision
A candidate may reach gauge but require care that is unsuitable for the intended project. Compare the original and candidate label instructions, then treat the swatch using the intended real-world method before measuring it.
Do not describe care compatibility as guaranteed. Labels provide manufacturer instructions, while the project combines that yarn with a particular stitch structure and construction.
When to reject the candidate
Reject or pause a candidate when acceptable gauge requires an unsuitable fabric, treatment changes the dimensions beyond the construction’s tolerance, the surface defeats the stitch pattern, the care requirements do not fit the project, or key product information cannot be recovered.
A documented rejection is useful. It prevents a label match from being presented as stronger evidence than it is.
