How to Calculate Yarn for Multiple Crochet Panels
Estimate yarn for several crochet panels by grouping only compatible fabrics, calculating each group separately, and adding lengths after conversion.

Direct answer
Add panel areas before extrapolating yarn only when the same representative swatch applies to every panel. That means the same yarn product, hook, stitch pattern, measured gauge, treatment state, and intended fabric behavior.
For each compatible group:
group area = sum of panel areas
estimated group mass = group area × (swatch mass / swatch area)
estimated group length = estimated group mass × (label length / label mass)
Calculate incompatible groups separately, then add their estimated lengths for the project total. This extends the swatch-area method described by Dora Does while preserving the product-specific mass and length fields explained by the Craft Yarn Council.
Create a swatch signature
Before grouping panels, compare these fields:
- exact yarn product and package;
- hook size;
- stitch pattern or fabric sequence;
- measured stitch and row gauge;
- washed or blocked state;
- intended density and fabric behavior.
If one field changes materially, start another group. A front panel in a dense texture and a back panel in open mesh should not share one density merely because they use the same yarn.
Calculate one compatible group
Suppose a project has two identical rectangular panels, each 20 by 24 inches. The combined area is:
2 × 20 × 24 = 960 square inches
A representative 6-by-6-inch swatch has an area of 36 square inches and weighs 0.7 ounces.
estimated mass = 0.7 × (960 / 36) = 18.67 ounces
If the yarn label states 364 yards per 7 ounces:
estimated length = 18.67 × (364 / 7) = 970.7 yards
This is a base planning estimate. It does not include a hidden allowance.
Calculate incompatible groups separately
A cardigan might contain:
- body panels in one stitch pattern;
- ribbed bands with a different hook;
- sleeves with a different gauge;
- a border or collar not represented by the body swatch.
Estimate each group from its own representative swatch. After each mass has been converted with the correct product label, add the lengths:
total base length = group A length + group B length + group C length
Do not add masses from different yarn products and then apply one label ratio.
Treat finishing as real fabric
Borders, seams, joins, tassels, pockets, and extra swatches use yarn. Represent them either as:
- a separate measured swatch and area group;
- a known length from a comparable documented component;
- an explicit user-controlled planning allowance.
Do not hide an arbitrary finishing factor inside the base formula.

Limits
A swatch-based calculation remains an estimate. Accuracy depends on representative fabric, area measurements, consistent making, and product-label inputs. Irregular panels need a defensible effective area rather than a bounding rectangle.
