How to Calculate Yarn for Multiple Crochet Panels
Estimate yarn for several panels by grouping only compatible fabrics, calculating each group separately, and adding converted lengths.
Direct answer
Add panel areas before extrapolating yarn only when one representative swatch applies to every panel. The yarn product, hook, stitch pattern, gauge, and treatment must match.
For each compatible group:
group area = sum of panel areas
group mass = group area × (swatch mass / swatch area)
group length = group mass × (label length / label mass)
Calculate incompatible groups separately and add their final lengths. Do not add masses from different yarn products and apply one label ratio.
Example
Two 20 × 24 inch panels total 960 square inches. A 6 × 6 inch swatch weighs 0.7 ounces. The label states 364 yards per 7 ounces.
The base estimate is about 18.67 ounces and 970.7 yards. Borders, ribbing, sleeves, or textured sections need their own group when the representative fabric differs.
