Choose an explicit planning allowance from project risks without treating any percentage as a universal crochet standard.

Calculate a defensible base estimate first. Then add a separate, visible allowance based on uncertainties the model does not cover.

No reviewed standard establishes one universal percentage. Public conventions differ, so the site does not preselect a supposedly correct value.
Review the uncertainty
Consider finishing, joins, extra swatches, irregular geometry, tension variation, design changes, replacement availability, dye-lot concerns, and confidence in the measurements.
Keep package rounding separate
A result of 5.05 skeins and a result of 5.95 skeins both require 6 whole packages. Review the exact ratio and the rounded purchase count before deciding whether another contingency is justified.
Extra yarn does not guarantee a later color match, correct gauge, fit, or enough material after a redesign. It only changes the planned quantity.
