A representative swatch can support a planning estimate when the project uses the same yarn, hook, stitch fabric, measured gauge, and finishing treatment.
base project mass = swatch mass × (project area / swatch area)
base project length = base project mass × (label length / label mass)
The result is an estimate, not a guarantee. It depends on the quality of the measurements and on whether the swatch represents the finished fabric.
What to measure
Record the finished width, height, and mass of a treated swatch; the dimensions of each compatible project component; and the exact length and mass printed on the selected yarn label. Calculate components separately when yarn, hook, stitch pattern, gauge, or treatment changes.
Worked example
A 6 × 6 inch swatch weighs 0.7 ounces. A rectangular project is 40 × 50 inches. The label states 364 yards per 7 ounces.

2,000 in². - Area multiplier:
2,000 / 36 = 55.56. - Estimated mass:
0.7 × 55.56 = 38.89 oz. - Estimated length:
38.89 × (364 / 7) = 2,022.22 yd.
A personal 10% planning allowance would produce 2,224.44 yards, or 6.11 packages at 364 yards each. Purchasing requires 7 whole packages. The base result and the allowance should remain separate.
Limits
Irregular shapes, dense borders, seams, joins, color changes, mistakes, tension drift, and design changes are not inferred. Use an effective area only when you can defend it, and label that result as lower confidence.
